About a year ago Maja Krstic (35) exchanged her career in fashion to fully focus on making art. Well for a while at least, as she’s about to launch her own swimwear brand on the side...
A resumé of dream-jobs, that each girl in fashion dreams of, allowed Maja to travel the world during inspiration and buying trips. And with the responsibility to lead teams within the design departments of respectable fashion companies like Scotch & Soda and Sissy-boy, Maja was used to tons of stress and too little rest. I got the chance to talk to her and learn how she’d managed back then and what changed now that she started for herself.
LIFE OF A CREATIVE DIRECTOR "For the past 10 years I’ve led a busy & stressful life while working for different fashion companies. I was happy traveling the world, really it was great, but time for myself wasn’t on my agenda.
I used to be running around all day, going from meeting to meeting. Never finishing one and always late for the next. I was kind of addicted to stress, work and silly schedules. I travelled so much that there were periods of waking up on three different continents within a week. I just kept on going, like life revolved around work. I’m an extreme perfectionist and so critical when it comes to my own work, that it's difficult for me to cool down. I won't stop until it's perfect.
But in the end, when I reached that point, I used to be able to take a break and think ‘it’s time for a well-deserved rest’. That's quite different now that I work for myself. I'm so in love with what I do, that it doesn’t feel like work. Therefore, it costs me much more effort and awareness to actually take that break."
BRAIN BREAK "To really step out of it I like to practice yoga. And it works wonders for me. It brings me back to myself. And it always gives me answers. Or, and I know this sounds like a big cliché, when I close my eyes while meditating I always get to a point where I figure things out by not even looking for an answer. The funny thing is, I'm living a busy life again, but I’ve never been more peaceful in my mind. I'm happy and satisfied, I’m fine.
I guess we all have times when we’re stressed and we're really not into taking breaks. But if I can manipulate my mind to get there anyway, I give myself the chance to listen to what I really need, I think that’s the key."
"The only way to truly succeed in anything you do, is to believe in it."
THE LUXURY OF FREEDOM "I’m aware of how lucky I am with the freedom and flexibility I’m having now. I’ve always fought agenda’s and now I can finally treat them my way. When I started working on my own, I became more true to myself. If I don’t feel like doing something, I’ll just postpone it. Especially with creating art. I really need to be into it. And I don’t always have that inspiration. But if I do, I can easily go on until the early hours of the morning. It can be exhausting the day after, when my little boy wakes up. But it’s always worth it.
MY SAFE ZONE “I might be in love with what I do, but starting my own family was the best and most powerful thing I’ve ever experienced. Something that words can’t explain. We cherish the time spent together and keep each other aware of how precious our little world is. We enjoy our city life a lot, but making plans of building a self-sustainable house somewhere in the nature, out of Amsterdam. With a light, spacious atelier within."
COLD SHOWERS "In general, I'm not a morning person. A few years ago I discovered the effects of taking a cold shower in the morning and it has become my way of waking up. No matter how short or broken my night was. And always - without exception – I start the day with coffee and my fav play list. After that I'm more than ready for a new day!"
HAPPY LIFE "My parents taught me how to appreciate the small things in life and that happiness isn't in material things. No matter how challenging life sometimes is, we should always try to stay honest and true to ourselves. Make a difference between truly important and less important. Let go more. Try to worry less. And grant yourself little treats. Like booking a massage or opening that bottle of good wine, even if it's only you. And buying that lace..."
